White German Shepherds are said to make poor guard dogs, because their bright color makes them stand out, making it easier for criminals to spot and avoid them.

While this may be true, their loyalty and protective qualities are exactly the same as their black and tan counterparts.

And more often than not, they will be covered by a fence or inside your house anyway, so in terms of a residential setting, there isn’t really much difference either way.

The qualities that have come to make GSD’s one of the most popular guard dogs are the same ones you need to monitor and keep in check to find the right balance between protection and aggression.

As with many dogs, white German Shepherds are very protective of their owners.

Sometimes, this can lead to being overly protective, spiraling into over-aggression and unwarranted attacks.

It is absolutely essential that you socialize your young shepherd early and often, bringing him around other dogs and people, as well as introducing him to as many situations as possible to decrease his chances of being surprised or scared of random events.

A German Shepherd breeder that goes above and beyond the call of duty will actually start socializing their litters from birth until the time the puppies change hands.

And if you’re worried about over-socializing him to the point of just licking an actual threat, don’t be. Even the happiest German Shepherd will be able to sense the danger and fear of a serious situation.

They will fight and defend to their very last breath for their owners, so with the proper training, you can have an extremely calm and friendly family pet that is willing to attack a threat in an instant.

Another great way to keep them calm and socialized is exercise. All dogs need exercise, and white German Shepherds are no exception, since nearly the entire shepherd line was bred for endurance and speed.

Playtime isn’t enough, because long walks will satisfy a different primal need of traveling and walking together with a pack, even if it’s just you and your dog.

Remember, it may take a little extra time to find the right mix of friendly and protective, but proper German Shepherd dog training will be worth it in the end for you and your family.

Yes, white German Shepherds can have the beauty and the brawn!
