Origins
The German Shepherd Dog (sometimes abbreviated to GSD), is also commonly referred to as an Alsatian, or occasionally Schaferhund, Berger Allemand, or Deutscher Schaferhund.
This is a very popular and much-loved breed of large-sized dog which originated in Germany, relatively recently, with its origin dating to around 1899. The German Shepherd is essentially a herding dog, developed for herding and guarding sheep.
They are highly intelligent, strong and obedient, open to training, which also makes them ideal for use by security, police, armed forces and customs.
Description
The German Shepherd dog`s coat is made up of a thick undercoat, and a dense outer coat which it sheds all year-round. There are medium and long-haired varieties, the long-haired is rarer and often considered a fault by many breeders and organisations.
Although there are many color variations, including tan and black, red and black, all black, all white, blue and liver, the breed has a very bold and distinctive look. The muzzle is relatively long and squarish, black-nosed, and the head is dome-shaped in appearance with large, open fronted, erect ears. The jaws are extremely strong, with a scissor-like bite.
The eyes are brown, medium-sized and at the opposite end there is a long bushy tail.
They stand around 60 centimetres (24 inches) to the shoulders and weigh between 28 and 40 kilograms.
People all over the world love the German Shepherd Dog, it is a highly popular breed and it has featured in many paintings, and sketches by artists such as the internationally renowned Mike Sibley who produces amazingly life-like portraits and prints of many breeds of dog.
Traits
They are also highly protective, yet, affectionate and loyal and make extremely good family pets as long as they are well-trained and made aware of their position within the hierarchy of your family pack.
A bold, inquisitive, well-mannered dog, whose eyes show a depth of character. Very loyal. Will require plenty of exercise and proper training at an early age.
