Most German Shepherd owners would love to train their dog by themselves. But, although German Shepherds are among the most intelligent dog breeds and are very easy to train, it is not possible for everyone to do it on their own; lack of experience or know-how and lack of time are some of the reasons many dog owners prefer to hire a professional dog trainer. But how can someone choose the right professional? Mind you, there is no official licensing or regulations to open a dog training company and there are a lot of unqualified practitioners claiming to be professional dog trainers. So, here are some tips on how to choose the right dog trainer for you and your German Shepherd.

A good dog trainer:

- will often be focused solely on being a professional dog trainer, and will not also be a dog importer / dealer / breeder, etc.

- will discuss their training methods in detail and get your approval for every course of action.

- will use up-to-date dog training techniques, which do not include any form of physical abuse whatsoever. It would be a good idea that you do some research about modern dog training practices in order to assess the trainer’s system.

- will be clear about their fees right from the start.

- will set a specific timetable and leave nothing to chance.

- will customize the training to suit the needs of you and your dog by assessing both characters and temperaments. Don’t forget that the trainer will train both of you.

- will have decent and clean facilities; it is a sign that they are serious about their work.

- will provide samples of their previous work, present their own dog, let you observe their training and encourage you to talk with other clients.

- will not limit to teaching basic commands, but will work on the dog’s psychology and behavior as well.

- will be happy to answer every single question you may have, no matter how “ignorant” you may sound.

- will keep in touch with you and your dog after the completion of the training course and will be happy to assist you with any problems that may arise in the future.

Having these tips in mind will help you choose the right professional in order to properly train your German Shepherd. Keep in mind, though, that dogs are intelligent animals with a personality and a mind of their own. There are no guarantees as to how your dog will react to training and the bottom line is that a dog can never be completely controlled by a human. A good trainer knows this and will never guarantee you the end results of their training. So, the ultimate goal is to choose a trainer you can trust and, together, do the best you can in order to turn your German Shepherd into a happy, healthy and psychologically balanced dog.
