I’m sure by now you have heard that Labrador Retrievers are the most popular dog in America and have been so for several years. You know what I’m talking about if you’ve ever looked into the eyes of a Lab puppy because they instantly give you love. They are such a good natured dog. Let’s look at some reasons why this dog is so popular and why it’s a great family dog.

Great Personalities:

There are many people who like the size and how easy it is to take care of a labs coat, however, the most important thing about labs is their wonderful personality. They are just plain FUN! No matter what you are doing or what you want to do, your lab will do it with you. Here’s just a few things they love.

Hiking: They love to hike! Not only is it great exercise for them, but they also love just being with YOU. Plus, it gets you off the couch!

Swimming: You can bet your pet lab will not hesitate to jump right in the water with you. They have the most amazing coat. It has an undercoat that lies beneath the topcoat that acts as insulation. These dogs have an instinct to hunt and if they have to go through water to get their bird, the undercoat along with its natural oils will help to repel the cold water.

Balls and Frisbees: Throw the ball or Frisbee and watch your pet retrieve it for you. These dogs are probably the easiest dogs to train because they catch on very quickly.

Walking with the Kids: Your children will have so much fun walking their lab. Have them take the dog to a dog park so they can actually run with them, too. Then sit back and watch how much fun your lab will have playing with your children.

They Love Your Friends as Well as Your Family:

Your Labrador does not discriminate. They love everyone in the family equally. They show so much devotion and are very loyal. Also, it’s amazing how this breed will remember your friends even if they come to your house twice a year. They will treat your friends just like family. They love life!

Very Intelligent:

Labs are very bright dogs. They are definitely smart enough to get themselves into trouble because they can easily figure things out for themselves. But they are easily trained so it doesn’t take long to correct any bad habits they create. You just need to be home with them and use patience.

Extremely Active:

These dogs have great energy, so if you are thinking about getting one, you need to understand that you have to have a family that has great energy and likes to do things with a dog. If you leave them alone for several hours a day you can bet they will find a way to amuse themselves, and it’s usually in some way not very appealing to the owner.

Please remember to sit down with your family and make sure that BEFORE you get a Lab, everyone needs to be aware of how much time is needed to be spent with the dog. Labrador Retrievers (when left alone too long) have been known to pull a wood pile down (while looking for a squirrel or some other rodent), escape from the yard, dig holes by the fence to get out and chase rabbits in the neighbor’s yard, bark too much and be destructive chewers. So it’s very important you spend a lot of time with your dog every day by giving him a lot of exercise so he stays out of trouble. If you do this you will have the best family dog you could ever own.
