Who is on top of things right from the beginning? This is one question that has to be answered if you want to own a German Shepherd. Because of the size of these dogs, the owner must stay in control of the dog. The owner must become the “alpha” leader of the pack even if the pack has only two members, your dog and the owner. When your dog realizes this complex relationship, training should flow smoothly and the owner will be happy and your dog will be comfortable fitting into his owner’s home. As the “alpha”, the owner mustn’t ever surrender his authority for even one minute. Do not underestimate your pet’s intelligence. But do not worry too much because this breed is extremely trainable.

Methods to Commence?

You lead and he follows. Your puppy will accept this set up. You can soon transfer your authority to other members of your family. Coach your loved ones on methods to treat the dog. You know how to show affection, but this show of feelings shouldn’t hamper training. Your dog should get consistent training every day. A spoiled dog will act like a leader, and you don’t want that. This is the very reason that this dog training must start right away.

The Basics

German Shepherd puppies are very clever. They originated from a long line of shepherding dogs. They are naturally able to control their emotions and their actions. Determined by the type of coaching he received, the German Shepherd will react quickly to motivation. This single fact will demonstrate to the new owner that this is an animal that has to be challenged and dog training is just the start of his schooling. The shepherd needs a substantial amount of exercise which can be coupled with his usual training. German Shepherds are aloof to other creatures when not trained. Mingling is important for a German Shepherd.

Spend time training your pet. Remember, don’t change your approach to rewarding a good response by your dog. If you’ve been training the dog to move on the command of “walk”, do not substitute any modification of that command. Dog training requires that the command must be clear and when completed by your dog, a treat ought to be awarded.

Realistic Expectations

A German Shepherd’s attention span isn’t long. This fact alone can impact your dog schooling in a negative manner, if you let it do so. In time, your dog’s attention span may become longer. Just be in line with commands.
