Beautiful, smart and loyal dogs. They shed, they need lots of excersice. They love to be outdoors and they are very loyal pets. They make good guard dogs too.

To reduce shedding you an comb it a lot. Except that’s pretty annoying too, so I’d rather let it shed.

No, they do not make good outside dogs. No dog should be gotten just to be dumped outside. And a lonely GSD is a destructive and potentially mean GSD.
Yes, they shed A TON. You can try to reduce this with regular grooming and high quality food.
A good amount of exercise. An hour or two of walking or active playing is best.
is a good start, but unfortunately some of the links are down. Find a good breeder via this site and talk to them about the breed.

they are good outside dogs, they do kinda shed a lot, i don’t think you can really reduce it besides brushing their fur, they need lots of excersise to stay healthy, and it’s great owninng one, they are usually very friendly but are protective and gaurding. A german shepard would make a great companion

I have a German Shepherd. Mine loves to go outside and run around. He does shed alot and I have to brush him every day. You have to watch out for hip dysplacia because it is most common in German Shepherds.

they make good outside dogs!
and to reduce the sheding you brush them a lot to pull out any loose hair…if you brush them like every other day at the minimum they are fine.
take them on walks like 1 out of 3 days or so….or play with them in the backyard.
they are really cool to have….very loyal too. and make good guard dogs…not super agressive or anything just protective…if some guy breaks in he will be in trouble with the gs.

German shepards are excellent pets. They are so smart and very protective. They would be ok outside i guess. they do not shed a ton, that is if you get a really good pure bred one. They need alot of excercise but not as much as a greyhound. Some good play running and rough housing and they are good oh yea did i mention playing ball OMG they seem to love that. They are so smart it’s unbelievable. They listen really well if you train them right, when they are pups. I would highly recommend one

German Shepherds are great family pets, loyal, protective, obedient and intelligent.
They do make good outside dogs.
They do moult, but then all dogs moult. You can’t reduce the shedding but just groom regularly.
Exercise daily is needed, like a walk for 30 minutes minimum a day is good. If you have a big backyard, that is very good too.
You need to train it well and show the dog that you are boss, and then the dog will always respect you.

1. No, GSDs make lousy outside dogs. They are very pack-oriented animals and they need to be indoors with their family at all times. GSDs are very prone to separation-anxiety because of this. Although they do need a lot of exercise and preferably a fenced yard, they need to be with their pack (you and your family) for at least the majority of the day, or else problems like aggression or destructiveness can develop.
2. Yes, they shed a ton. To reduce shedding, feed a good-quality food (Canidae, Solid Gold, Innova, Wellness…NOT Iams, Eukanuba, Purina, Pedigree) and brush, brush, brush. Brushing won’t reduce the shedding, but it will help to get all the loose fur out in one place so it doesn’t stick all over your clothes and furniture.
3. A good one-hour of jogging, plus a visit to the dog park and some games every day would probably be adequate.

my family is german shepard crazy lol as long a si can remeber we have has one or more at all times they are the best dogs, great for outside, we never had one thet shed alot, they need plenty of exercise, if you get a female and dont let her have puppies she will treat you as her puppy, they are very protective specialy over children i have had a 1/2 shepard 1/2 collie sence i was 8 yrs old and she has risked her life to protect mine, she faught off a very angery bob cat that trapped me in the chicken coop one night i was like 13yrs old.

Had German shepherd most of my life/ Great dogs. They are a working dog and eager to please. Will be good protective dogs too. Very intelligent. They do not shed all that much. They do not have long hair. Easy dog to train. Recommend them highly. [Get a thoroughbred, not a crossbreed].

I grew up with one since I was a baby until I was in high school, German Shepherd was an awesome dog to have !!! Couldn’t be better. It was strong deterence to burglars and vaccuum salesmen who wouldn’t take no for an answer, with its unrelenting courage and serious bark, but at the same time, it was so gentle and conscientious and careful around our kittens, small pets, our budgie bird, family babies, and my childhood friends.
As adults now, my sister has a professional kennel to supply serious dogs for police departments and for seeing-eye dogs for blind people too. Dogs who are accustomed to being outside are ok there, and the thickness of their coat will adapt to their conditions, so thicker in fall and winter, and more shedding in spring. Make sure they have some shelter from wind and rain, and during extreme cold, bring them in. If they’re accustomed to being indoors quite a bit, then don’t just leave them outside almost all the time. Also, never keep German Shepherds indoors all the time with no fresh air and exercise. All German Shepherds appreciate some time outside, to go for a walk or run, play chase, etc.
When its outside, its your resposibility to ensure there is no clash between the dog and uniformed people, posties, and mischievous teenagers. Its best to keep it in the house at night, to keep it warm and to protect your home and people in it too.

Why? Are you thinking of owning one? If so I would advise yo to research the breed thoroughly first (not just on here) or reading info but by talking to people who know. Talk to responsible breeders and find a club that specializes in the breed. Here in the UK there is BAGSDS (British Association of German Shepherd Dogs) and I should think there is an equivalent in the US.
In doing this you will find the answers to your questions and much more. German Shepherds are (in my opinion) the ultimate dog and deserve no less.

I have a GSD. Yes, they shed a LOT. They need a lot of excercise and they do okay outside but still like the couch. Love mine a lot.

Okay you know German shepherds r great dogs to have3
Okay:
- they r good outside dogs! Really good! Just you got to train them, so that they don’t make a big mess! And you have to socialize them as puppies! Because if not they will become to overprotective and they will bark a lot!
- They shed a lot! But you can’t really reduce it! Just a good daily brush will probably fix it! and thats all u have to do.
- they need a lot of exercise! A long walk or a long run will help them! And make sure they don’t pull you… they have to learn to walk at your pace!
-They are just great dogs to have you just have to train them and feed them.. Also give them a time cycle with their food!
I have a German and we would always feed him at 6 in the morning, but then we got into vacation and he was to used to it, so he would bang on the windows and wake us up and the destroy the yard, so best if you feed him at a time where you are always free!
