Most of the dog owners are facing the problem of their dog’s excessive chewing habit. You can easily control the chewing of your dog. Generally puppies have this problem but some times adult dogs also do have. To avoid chewing of your furniture and garbage that can drive you insane, you can divert the dog’s attention by giving appropriate activities. Obedience training is important for your dog.

There are some basic reasons for chewing which should be understood by the owner. One of the basic reasons that can lead it to chew anything is to reduce the pressure when the new teeth are emerging out and to help the new teeth in. Another reason for chewing is that the dog does not have any other activity and does so because of boredom or excess energy. To release this excessive energy, the dogs will chew. If the dog smells something interesting, it may chew that to satisfy its curiosity. Even if they are anxious, they may chew. The dog usually explores with its mouth to find out more about new things around him.

How to stop destructive chewing? First of all you have to put your puppy or dog in a kennel or in a secure room which does not have items of chewing. This confinement should be temporary until you train the dog to identify the things that can be chewed or not. You can also lock him in a kennel in order to protect them as well as your household items. To keep the dog engaged, buy different toys or bones and change these toys periodically to keep it interested. Never give old socks, shoes or household item to chew as they cannot distinguish between an old and a new one.

Make sure to provide plenty of exercise to your dog when you are at home in order to keep the dog busy. Give enough time to your dog for running and playing with you. Find out how much good exercise time is needed for your dog to keep it healthy and happy.

The dog may also chew when you leave. Make sure that your leaving is painless or inconspicuous by spending quality time with it and also ensure to leave your scent on a toy or bone. Ensure that your dog is distracted with some activities to make them not to think about your absence. If you find the dog chewing an inappropriate thing, take it away and give him a chew toy. If he chews an appropriate thing, praise him. At the time of training you have to praise the dog for positive response because praise is more effective than discipline.
