The breed is commonly referred to as the “Gentle giant” and the “Apollo of all breeds”. Great Danes are considered the tallest dog breed along with the Irish Wolfhound. More recently, Great Danes have been in the Guinness World Records for tallest dog. The Great Dane was named the state dog of Pennsylvania in 1965. History ———- Some sources state that dogs similar to Great Danes were known in Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. Various sources report that the Great Dane was developed from the medieval boarhound, and of the Mastiff and Irish wolfhound lines. It is also reported that the Great Dane was developed from mastiff-like dogs taken to Germany by the Alans. The breed may be about 400 years old. The Bullenbeisser may be its direct ancestor, composing about the 40% of its make-up. According to Barbara Stein, “The breed originated in Germany, probably from a cross between the English mastiff and the Irish Wolfhound.”; however, other sources maintain that the breed originated in Denmark, and still others report the question as controversial and unsettled. In 1749 Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon used the name “le Grand Danois b…/b

I love the cropped ears

@pilsnerbob To deprive an individual of a significant part of her or his body is as outrageous as it is unnecessary. The Council of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the British Government, and the Council of Europe all oppose tail docks, and ear cropping is illegal in England, West Germany Australia and several Canadian provinces. That this inhumane cosmetic surgery should be legal in the USA brings shame on your country.
Danes have beautiful natural velvet ears. Leave them alone

@peto0101 it’s not mutilating, it’s called cropping. and i personally have my dogs knocked out before having this done as it obviously must be painful, but after that your dog looks badass, their happy, you’re happy.
look up presa canarios and you’ll see what types of dogs got this ‘trend’ started.

Why mutilate their ears to make them stick up. This cruelty is illegal in the UK and rightly so.

@spadawah Thank you! I never thought to look there, I’d love one as you say mixed breeds have less health problems which is why a great dane/lab mix would be great for me my 2 fav breeds.

@DiverforPort
There are plenty of those! Go to the Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue’s website (google it) and you will see one come up for adoption on with that rescue every month or so. Generally, mixes don’t have as many health problems as labs. Also, it is much cheaper to adopt the mix breeds, and they are almost always mixed with labs!

Apparently GDs make good apartment dogs. As long as they’re exercised at least twice a day, when they’re at home they’re pretty chill. I live in an area that’s over 98% rental apartments and condos and I’ve seen 2-3 Great Danes. The owners all say as long as they’re exercised they tend to just lie on their beds – or the sofa if you let them “-)
