@bombathreats Yes, that would be absolutely fine. You’d just have to get a smaller one.

My Mom first tried to use the gentle leader on her dog to try and train him not to pull on the leash. Good sweet mike he hated that thing. He would hide under the table whenever she brought it out, which says a lot since he LOVES walks. She then decided to try the pinch collar and it worked wonders, and her dog would walk right into it as she put it on him.

Remember every tool has the potential to be dangerous. The trainers at the clicker school I went to don’t even recommend using gentle leaders. Easywalk and Sensation harnesses are the new thing. Those don’t always allow enough control like my mom’s 80lbs dog that wants to kill cats.

Then I started using correction. The prong was the most effective tool for her in addition to rewards for the correct behavior after correction. She even comes up to me to put it on. She is not bothered by it and knew the commands before we started using it so she knows what is expected and should be doing. She is now a very friendly girl and more secure now that I have given her better guidance. I’m working with a friend with a GSD that is also doing well with the prong.

I started training my German Shepherd using clicker and purely positive methods like taught by karen pryor. By the age of 1 yr my dog was a nightmare, she was jumping on people, barking, and acting protective in any situation that made her uncomfortable. The rewards from positive methods were not more rewarding for her than her behavior. These are self rewarding behaviors. I’d put on a gentle leader and she would shut down, forging ahead and pulling.

There is nothing wrong with a prong collar if used properly. It doesn’t harm or hurt if used correctly. Matter of fact, I’ve put it on myself on various body parts just to make sure, and it’s fine. Like he said, no hard corrections. In reality, with this collar,the dog essentially corrects himself. I’ve used Chokers,and I’ve used Gentle Leads on my dog. The choker is just bad news, and the Gentle Lead can be ‘strong necked’ and can actually cause a lot of damage to the dog.

No matter what people think about ANY tool, its how it’s used that matters. Bottom line: if your not comfortable with it, don’t do it; if you are… Then go ahead. Like the guy said, respect is important.

Why would you use pain infliction on an aggressive dog? Try some science backed facts to work with aggressive dogs – idiot.
Go and get some education on psychology and training.

I wonder why it is hat people like Emma Parsons, Patricia McConnell, Jean Donaldson, Brenda Aloff, Sophia Yin to name a few do NOT use pinch collars, chokers or other aversives to rehab extreme aggressive dogs – thousands of them? I wonder why Robert Milner and Steve White, just to name 2 do not find it necessary to use aversives to train SR and service dogs?
I wonder why you don’t study THEIR methods instead of inflicting more pain and suffering. Aversives “work”, but what about the fallout?

I have to say that you’re crazy, but your videos are a lot of fun to watch. While I tend to shy away from prong collars, thank you for taking a whole video to explain why you use them and how you use them, especially that RESPECT it the A#1 thing for you. The best moment was your allowing Hunkie to tug on the leash while you had the prong collar on to demonstrate poor usage of the collar.

what’s the deal with the dog suit? Does it make him more comfortable? I have been involved with animals of all kinds for over 30 years, and very have seen this method. If it works, I would like to see more.

I just want to add something (Darn my must get in my POV) that another bad thing about using the Gentle leader on an aggressive dog is that, if the dog lunges, it will pull the muzzle back and could easily snap the dogs neck or cause some serious injury.

Wonderful on all accounts. I’ve taken to heart your adage on not using anything on the dog that you wouldn’t use on yourself. Thanks for the “Gentle necklace” suggestion, by the way…my dog no longer wears her ‘evil’ pinch collar!
Any updates on Hunkie? He looks just like my old dog (who happened to be aggressive as well when we adopted him), but more Lab-like!

Thanks for the video. How is hunkie coming along in training? I hope he doesnt get euthanized. Please keep us updated and let us know how he is doing with that. hen he used the collar on u i laughed so much, he was having fun playing. I hope he makes it, u know u love animals when ur at 2am with him training. Keep up the good work!
