Are Chicken livers healthy for dogs?

Heather asked:
I boiled some chicken livers for my dog yesterday. I gave him a small portion and put the rest in the freezer for later. He does not get liver very often (maybe once every few months) as a treat. Is this okay? I do not want to give him anything that will harm him. I have always heard that it is good for dogs as long as its every once in a while.

Liver is fine for dogs. In fact any part of any type of meat is fine for them.

Dogs love them. They will eat hearts as well.

Chicken liver is good for dogs, but I would continue you to give it to him as a treat. Liver is very rich, and is an organ food, so I would limit as you are doing.

definitely, especially frozen.

It’s actually the healthiest part for them. The organs are better for them, and they like them more. Any lean meat is ok for dogs, like cooked chicken or ground turkey. Sometimes as a treat I make my dogs a batch of homemade dog food to mix in with their normal dry food. I’ll cook ground turkey with shredded carrots and green beans and also some brown rice. They love it! You can also hard boiled eggs and crush them up, shell and all! The shell actually has alot of good nutrients. Just don’t ever feed your dog onion, grape, chocolate, or garlic… can be toxic.

sigh……………treats are EARNED.
Liver,any species,-in TINY amounts-is a good training reward.
BUT……….I wouldn’t waste it on dogs-*I* get first dibs.

a large amount of liver isn’t good for anything- the liver is essentially a filter.
it’s ok to give them every once in a while, they make good treats in training, because they have a strong smell.
i’d rather wrap them in bacon and eat them myself though.

In small amounts is perfectly fine. Too much liver is not good because it’s high in cholesterol but dogs do need organ meat so once a week or in every few weeks is fine.

They’re fine occasionally, but most vets recommend that they not be given frequently, especially if the dog is tiny. I have a yorkie (larger sized like 10 lbs) and he gets them maybe 3-4 times a year),.
